What the results mean
Each sample is tested for enterococci, bacteria that live in the gut of people and animals. They don't usually cause illness themselves, but high counts mean the water may also carry germs from sewage, stormwater or animal waste that can cause stomach upsets, rashes, and ear or eye infections.
Good 0 to 35 per 100 mL Moderate 36 to 70 Poor 71 or more. A Poor result is usually retested, and if it stays high the county health department issues an advisory and posts signs at the beach. More on how testing works.
